2023 T-Shirt All-Stars
The All-Star break is officially in the books, but an important question has yet to be answered: Who is on the 2022-23 NBA T-Shirt All-Star Team?
The first annual t-shirt all-stars debuted last year — an All-Star team comprised of only players that regularly wear a t-shirt under their jersey — but this year’s team has been much more difficult to put together.
That’s because several players are no longer repping t-shirts under their jerseys. (Looking at you Franz Wagner, Cole Anthony, Mike Conley, and P.J. Tucker.) And several others have been hurt this season (AD, Brandon Ingram, Cam Johnson, GP2, and Lonzo).
But we have at long last persevered and found a way.
Have no fear, the 2023 T-shirt All-Star Team is here.
Eastern Conference T-Shirt All-Stars
1. Darius Garland — Cleveland Cavaliers
For as much upheaval as the T-Shirt All-Stars have undergone this season, Darius Garland has remained its rock. Garland was a real All-Star for the first time last year, and you can easily argue that he should have been in this year’s game over Jrue Holiday.
Garland is putting up the exact same numbers as last season despite giving Donovan Mitchell the keys to his team. (DG is also shooting a career-high 41.9 percent from 3.) It says a lot about a player to be willing to welcome a new No. 1 option with open arms. Garland seems as high character as they come. The Cavs might smile more than any team in the league and nobody’s shines brighter than Garland’s.
2. Seth Curry — Brooklyn Nets
You know you are one of the best 3-point shooters of all time when you shoot 42.0 percent from beyond the arc and it drops your career average. That’s precisely the case with Seth Curry this season.
Previously donned the greatest shooter to ever wear a t-shirt under his jersey on a regular basis (but never forget that big bro Steph was actually wearing a tee in one of the most iconic games of all time), Seth now has direct competition on his own team with Cam Johnson’s arrival to Brooklyn in the Kevin Durant trade.
3. Cam Johnson — Brooklyn Nets
Between Seth Curry and Cam Johnson, it’s safe to say there has never before been a t-shirt sniper combo on the same team as lethal as this. He’s only played three games with the Nets, but Johnson made 45.5 percent of his 3-pointers in 17 games with the Suns this season.
Having a player on the T-Shirt All-Star team that has only played in 20 total games this season and just arrived to the Eastern Conference last week tells the story of how down the NBA’s t-shirt game is this year.
4. Bobby Portis — Milwaukee Bucks
The crazy-eyed People’s Champ has missed the last three weeks with an MCL sprain, but before that, Bobby Portis played in each of the first 47 games of the season as the Bucks’ iron man.
Portis was an early-season Sixth Man of the Year candidate. He’s averaging a double-double at 14 and 10 and a career-high 56.7 percent on 2-pointers.
5. Daniel Gafford — Washington Wizards
Averaging a cool 8 points and 5 rebounds per game in 19 minutes of work, this nod is all about Daniel Gafford’s commitment to the t-shirt game. (And it further paints the picture of just how much the T-Shirt All-Stars have taken a step back this year.)
But Gafford has been a dependable player for the Wizards this season, playing in 56 of 58 games. Believe it or not, Gafford is also top 10 in total blocks in the NBA this season. (He’s No. 9, right behind teammate Kristaps Porzingis.)
It’s worth mentioning that both Zach LaVine and Tyler Herro dabbled in the t-shirt game for brief stretches this season. But they did not commit enough to the bit to make the cut.
Western Conference T-Shirt All-Stars
1. Norman Powell - Los Angeles Clippers
Stormin’ Norman Powell is the only returning Western Conference T-Shirt All-Star from last season. He was still on the Blazers back then, but now he’s a potential Sixth Man of the Year candidate for the Clippers.
Powell had a slow start to the season dealing with some injuries, however, he has been red-hot ever since the calendar flipped to 2023. Powell connected on 47.8 percent of his 3-pointers in the month of January. He also has ten 20-point games off the bench since New Year’s after having just six such games over the first 2.5 months of the season.
2. Brandon Ingram - New Orleans Pelicans
Only playing in 24 games this season, Brandon Ingram makes the T-shirt All-Stars as the newest marquee player to start regularly wearing a t-shirt this season. The Pelicans have struggled mightily over the last two months while dealing with injuries that Ingram was a huge part of. (He missed two months with a toe injury.)
Zion is expected to be out several more weeks with his hammy, so BI will look to step up as the Pels’ No. 1 option, seeking to lead them to a late-season surge into the play-in/playoffs like he did last year.
3. Aaron Gordon - Denver Nuggets
Aaron Gordon is another new player to start wearing a T-shirt this season. It’s safe to say that it’s suiting him well. Gordon is putting up career-best numbers across the board: 17 and 7 a night with 39 percent from 3 and 64 percent on 2s.
There were plenty of people advocating for Gordon to be in the real All-Star Game. And every dunk contest makes us think of Mr. 9 out of 10.
4. Naz Reid - Minnesota Timberwolves
Naz Reid is as committed to the t-shirt game as anybody. Seriously, if you Google search images of Naz Reid, you have to go back to his high school days to see him sans tee. After a picture in his McDonald’s All-American jersey with a tee shirt and bowtie, he never stopped repping.
Reid has been vital for the T-Wolves this season. KAT has been out since late November, and Rudy Gobert has hardly been a good fit. Mike Conley’s trade-deadline arrival to Minnesota should help balance the offense. The T-Wolves have won 15 of the last 23 games, currently in the No. 8 spot in an ultra-tight Western Conference where the 12-seed is only 4.5 games behind third place.
5. Anthony Davis - Minnesota Timberwolves
It seems ludicrous now that Anthony Davis was not a T-shirt All-Star last season, but that was because AD missed an entire month with an injury. Yeah, he missed an entire month this season, too — the middle of December to late January is a stretch that AD hasn’t played since before the bubble. But let’s not forget that AD started this season as an absolute monster.
Honestly, the new-look Lakers squad looks promising. As always, the Lake Show can’t reach anywhere close to its highest potential without AD playing at the top of his game.
We have to note that both Jamal Murray and Luka Doncic (!!) wore t-shirts under their jerseys on multiple occasions, but it has not stuck for them to be qualified. If it ever does, consider them locks.
